They did this to ensure public access to the public domain. The Archive ensured the items were attributed and linked back to Google, which never complained, while libraries "grumbled".
According to Kahle, this is an example of Swartz's "genius" to work on what could give the most to the public good for millions of people.
These documents had been kept behind a federal court paywall. On the Archive, they had been accessed by more than six million people by The Archive's BookReader web app , built into its website, has features such as single-page, two-page, and thumbnail modes; fullscreen mode; page zooming of high-resolution images; and flip page animation.
The Open Library is another project of the Internet Archive. The wiki seeks to include a web page for every book ever published: it holds 25 million catalog records of editions.
It also seeks to be a web-accessible public library: it contains the full texts of approximately 1,, public domain books out of the more than five million from the main texts collection , as well as in-print and in-copyright books, which are fully readable, downloadable and full-text searchable ; it offers a two-week loan of e-books in its Books to Borrow lending program for over , books not in the public domain, in partnership with over 1, library partners from 6 countries after a free registration on the web site.
Open Library is a free and open-source software project, with its source code freely available on GitHub. The Open Library faces objections from some authors and the Society of Authors , who hold that the project is distributing books without authorization and is thus in violation of copyright laws, and four major publishers initiated a copyright infringement lawsuit against the Internet Archive in June to stop the Open Library project.
As of December , over 50 sponsors helped the Internet Archive provide over 5 million scanned books text items. The collections for scanning centers often include also digitisations sponsored by their partners, for instance the University of Toronto performed scans supported by other Canadian libraries.
In addition to web archives, the Internet Archive maintains extensive collections of digital media that are attested by the uploader to be in the public domain in the United States or licensed under a license that allows redistribution, such as Creative Commons licenses.
Media are organized into collections by media type moving images, audio, text, etc. Each of the main collections includes a "Community" sub-collection formerly named "Open Source" where general contributions by the public are stored.
The Audio Archive includes music, audiobooks , news broadcasts, old time radio shows, and a wide variety of other audio files.

The Archive has a collection of freely distributable music that is streamed and available for download via its Netlabels service.
The music in this collection generally has Creative Commons-license catalogs of virtual record labels.
Open Educational Resources is a digital collection at archive. This collection contains hundreds of free courses, video lectures, and supplemental materials from universities in the United States and China.
Upon launch, the service contained ", news programs collected over 3 years from national U. In , the Archive received an additional donation of "approximately 40, well-organized tapes" from the estate of a Philadelphia woman, Marion Stokes.
Voicing a strong reaction to the idea of books simply being thrown away, and inspired by the Svalbard Global Seed Vault , Kahle now envisions collecting one copy of every book ever published.
Alongside the books, Kahle plans to store the Internet Archive's old servers, which were replaced in The Internet Archive has "the largest collection of historical software online in the world", spanning 50 years of computer history in terabytes of computer magazines and journals, books, shareware discs, FTP web sites, video games , etc.
The Internet Archive has created an archive of what it describes as "vintage software", as a way to preserve them.
A combined hardware software system has been developed that performs a safe method of digitizing content. From to November , the Internet Archive operated the Internet Archive Federal Credit Union, a federal credit union based in New Brunswick, New Jersey , with the goal of providing access to low- and middle-income people.
In November , free downloads of Grateful Dead concerts were removed from the site. It was brought to my attention that all of the Grateful Dead shows were taken down from Archive.
I was not part of this decision making process and was not notified that the shows were to be pulled. I do feel that the music is the Grateful Dead's legacy and I hope that one way or another all of it is available for those who want it.
A November 30 forum post from Brewster Kahle summarized what appeared to be the compromise reached among the band members. Audience recordings could be downloaded or streamed, but soundboard recordings were to be available for streaming only.
Concerts have since been re-added. On May 8, , it was revealed that the Internet Archive had successfully challenged an FBI national security letter asking for logs on an undisclosed user.
On November 28, , it was revealed that a second FBI national security letter had been successfully challenged that had been asking for logs on another undisclosed user.
This occurred in conjunction with the English Wikipedia blackout , as well as numerous other protests across the Internet. The Archive advocates an alternative digital library project.
In February , Internet Archive users had begun archiving digital copies of Nintendo Power , Nintendo 's official magazine for their games and products, which ran from to The first issues had been collected, before Nintendo had the archive removed on August 8, In response to the take-down, Nintendo told gaming website Polygon , "[Nintendo] must protect our own characters, trademarks and other content.
The unapproved use of Nintendo's intellectual property can weaken our ability to protect and preserve it, or to possibly use it for new projects".
In August , the Department of Telecommunications of the Government of India blocked the Internet Archive along with other file-sharing websites, in accordance with two court orders issued by the Madras High Court , citing piracy concerns after copies of two Bollywood films were allegedly shared via the service.
On October 9, , the Internet Archive was temporarily blocked in Turkey after it was used amongst other file hoster by hackers to host 17 GB of leaked government emails.
In the midst of the COVID pandemic which closed many schools, universities, and libraries, the Archive announced on March 24, that it was creating the National Emergency Library by removing the lending restrictions it had in place for 1.
This Library would remain as such until at least June 30, or until the US national emergency was over, whichever came later.
The Internet Archive said the National Emergency Library addressed an "unprecedented global and immediate need for access to reading and research material" due to the closures of physical libraries worldwide.
Legally, they said they were promoting access to those inaccessible resources, which they claimed was an exercise in Fair Use principles.
The Archive continued implementing their Controlled Digital Lending policy that predated the National Emergency Library, meaning they still encrypted the lent copies and it was no easier for users to create new copies of the books than before.
An ultimate determination of whether or not the National Emergency Library constituted Fair Use could only be made by a court.
Morally, they also pointed out that the Internet Archive was a registered library like any other, that they either paid for the books themselves or received them as donations, and that lending through libraries predated copyright restrictions.
The operation of the National Emergency Library is part of the lawsuit filed against the Open Library project by four major book publishers in June , challenging the copyright validity of the program.
The Great Room of the Internet Archive features a collection of more than ceramic figures representing employees of the Internet Archive.
This collection, inspired by the statues of the Xian warriors in China , was commissioned by Brewster Kahle, sculpted by Nuala Creed , and is ongoing.
The Internet Archive visual arts residency, organized by Amir Saber Esfahani, is designed to connect emerging and mid-career artists with the Archive's millions of collections and to show what is possible when open access to information intersects with the arts.
During this one-year residency, selected artists develop a body of work that responds to and utilizes the Archive's collections in their own practice.

Tops was one of many record labels that made its profits by recording knockoff covers of hit songs with sound-alike singers, for sale at a discounted price.
Tops would even squeeze four songs onto each record—a big bang for your buck or rather, 39 cents, the price tag on a Tops record in the 50s!
This record is a great early snapshot of a little known part of Sammy Davis Jr. She helped start the Great 78s Project as a transfer engineer and project lead and now leads the 78rpm Dating Blitz Project.

Following our previous post , we have continued to receive messages about the impact of the National Emergency Library before it closed last week.
Betty A. The physical materials being unavailable have limited Interlibrary Loan success to strictly digital access. This has hindered many researchers and caused many loan requests that ordinarily would be fulfilled, to be cancelled.
The NEL has opened educational resources to those who had nowhere else to turn, had no way to gain access to the same materials that would otherwise be available if they had a library card, and allowed parents to assist their now home-schooled children in locating resources to complete their assignments by their required due dates.
I personally cannot thank IA enough for the many ways the NEL has helped me and my constituents and community. Tiger J.
Ennis B. Edwin S. We will be studying the history of pandemics and designing future public health heritage to increase awareness of the dangers of zoonotic pandemics while also reducing stigmatism of vulnerable populations.
I would be completely unable to do my job and keep a steady income without the assistance of NEL. Being able to successfully apply for external funding is necessary to keep my institute afloat and me employed.
I look forward to the day when online libraries will be the norm. This is an invaluable service that you provide to humanity.
Robert N. Manoj P. NEL was a real lifeline! Mayra M. Mark D. I was able to refer my students to the National Emergency Library to find books that would help them with their research papers.

From June 29 — July 18, the exhibition, featuring one artwork by each artist, will be on view via the Ever Gold [Projects] website.
Due to the COVID pandemic, the fourth annual Internet Archive artist in residency exhibition was cancelled—along with so many other visual art exhibitions in the Bay Area and across the globe.
This presented a serious challenge for emerging artists, who typically must pay for production expenses out of their own pocket when creating a body of work for exhibition in a gallery.
With canceled exhibitions making it impossible to recoup these costs, along with drastically slowing art sales, many artists have struggled with lost revenues.

As a six year old, the young Tenzin began having visions of an unknown place and the face of a man draped in saffron robes.
At ten, he left his boarding school in India to set off—Huck Finn-like—in search of an answer to those waking dreams. Instead he leaned in toward the unknown.
On June 5, , the Internet Archive invited this ordained Tibetan Buddhist monk to explore what his life lessons have to say about this tumultuous moment in history.
For the one hundred audience members, the question weighing most heavily on their hearts and minds centered on justice and social change.
Compassion training is as important as learning about science, math and literature. Criticism of systems is not enough.
We must respond with training mechanisms. Lack of empathy is a public health issue, and we must treat it as such.
In this moment when millions are in the streets demanding change, this Buddhist monk acknowledged the profound tension between action and contemplation.
When we truly recognize that there is no I without you. That there is no I without the other. That our sense of happiness is deeply intertwined, is deeply interconnected.
As long as we ignore that lesson of life, everything else is window dressing. Our team of librarians launched the NEL on March 24 to help those who were disconnected from their physical libraries, and the feedback our team received has been overwhelming.
Almost immediately after launch, we started receiving messages from teachers, librarians, and parents who were delighted to find needed books after many schools and libraries closed due to the COVID pandemic.
Additionally, we heard from researchers and educators who found texts for their coursework and research. Feedback continues to this day, indicating that the NEL has provided a necessary service for digital learners.
As we close the NEL , we are proud of our work and how it has helped. We gathered some of the most impactful statements to show how the NEL has been used and the impact it has made while our schools and libraries are closed.
We are excited that the needs of our patrons will continue to be met through traditional controlled digital lending.

Blake G. As a former librarian, I think what Open Library offers is exactly equivalent to what libraries do. You give people access to books to borrow for a limited period of time without charging anything for them.
